🏡 Starting Your Homeschool Journey in Virginia
Embarking on the homeschooling path can feel exciting—and overwhelming. In Virginia, the process is straightforward, supportive of parent choice, and backed by a growing community of families just like yours.
✅ Step 1: File a Notice of Intent (NOI)
You must notify your local school division (typically by August 15th) of your intention to homeschool. You can do this by submitting a Notice of Intent to Homeschool form or a letter, including:
-
Your name and address
-
Your child’s name and age
-
The method of instruction (parent-led, online curriculum, tutor, etc.)
-
A copy of your high school diploma or other qualifying credential (or statement of religious exemption)
📍In Loudoun and Fairfax Counties, these forms can be submitted online or by mail. Each county provides its own version of the NOI form.
📚 Step 2: Choose Your Curriculum
Virginia gives parents the freedom to select the curriculum that best fits their child’s needs. You may use:
-
A structured online program
-
A customized or thematic curriculum
-
Co-ops, microschools, or hybrid programs (like ours!)
-
Educational therapists or tutors
📝 Step 3: Submit Year-End Evidence of Progress
By August 1st each year, you’ll need to submit one of the following to your local school division:
-
Results from a nationally normed standardized test
-
An evaluation letter from a licensed teacher or other qualified professional
-
A portfolio of work reviewed by an evaluator
